Who are we?

We are Rodrigo (from Brazil) and Suddha (from India) calling Switzerland their home — two friends who bonded over food, flavor, travel, and the eternal question: what happens if you take one humble ingredient and make it absolutely world-class?

Our answer: butter. Because it is universal. But not just any butter — the golden, nutty kind that chefs whisper about and grandmothers swear by. Clarified butter/Ghee and brown butter are found everywhere from Indian kitchens to French bistros, so it felt like the perfect place to begin.

And why Switzerland? Because if you are going to start a butter revolution, you might as well do it in the land of legendary milk and happy cows with better views than most people’s apartments.

So here we are: two friends, many cows, one ingredient, and a whole lot of slow-cooked obsession. We don’t just make butter, we clarify indulgence and bottle joy. Whether you are searing, roasting, baking, drizzling, or just spooning it straight from the jar (we won’t tell), 1186 is here to make your food sing.

Why 1186?

People often ask us: what’s with the number? Is it a secret recipe? A date in butter history? A mysterious code?  Nope — it’s actually the postcode of Essertines-sur-Rolle, a little Swiss village where our story begins.

That’s where we met Sylvain Mignot, a second-generation cheesemaker, who runs his legendary fromagerie in 1186 – where he transforms 1,600,000 kilos of milk into Gruyere AOP and Raclette des Rottieres. He sources his milk, mainly from producers in the region from St-George, Gimel, and Biere - some of the finest milk you’ll ever taste. It’s here, in this patch of Switzerland where cows graze like royalty, that we source the ingredients for our clarified and brown butter.

For us, 1186 isn’t just a number. It’s a place, a community, and a commitment to quality. Every jar we make carries a little bit of that Swiss hillside magic, bottled up and ready for your kitchen.
